OP London Meet Draws Enthusiastic Crowd

Last Friday's Old Princethorpians' London Meet at The Riverside, in Vauxhall, drew an enthusiastic crowd of over 30 OPs from across the decades.

A warm welcome from the Princethorpe contingent including OPs Chairman, Peter Rollason, (Class of 1977), and beautiful autumn sunshine greeted the OPs as they arrived at the pub. As the sunset and night fell the OPs lapped up the views from the glass fronted bar and outside terrace area which overlooked the Thames with stunning views to Battersea Power Station and back to the London Eye.

The London meet is now a well-established event in our calendar and many of the attendees were regulars, though it was lovely to see a fair few new faces too. OPs were represented from as early as the 1970s, the 1980s and there was a large contingent of younger OPs from 2011 onwards. Some of the guests had not seen each other for over 40 years but picked up where they had left off.

Longstanding and much-loved teacher, Alex Darkes, enjoyed reminiscing with past pupils, and as ever it was a delight to see the OPs of all ages networking, swapping stories and enjoying each other’s company. Special mention must go to international OPs, Louise Gusterson (Class of 1983), who was visiting from her home in New Zealand and Ernest Springley (Class of 1975), who came over from Germany for the occasion.

The welcome drinks and delicious hot and cold buffet laid on by the OPs Committee were also much appreciated by all.

Our next OPs Pub Meet takes place closer to Princethorpe upstairs at The Fox and Vivian, Clarendon Street in Leamington on Friday 8 March, you can register your interest on our Events page here.

OPs Crowned Champions At Annual OP Vs College Sports Day

It was amazing to have the OPs vs College Sports Day back in full swing and to see so many familiar faces on Saturday 2 September. This popular annual fixture traditionally kicks off the College’s sporting calendar for the year ahead.

Many of the OPs playing this year had just recently returned from the summer South Africa Sports Tour and it was great to see them catching up with pupils.

The Staff Football Team started the morning in good spirits but the younger OPs team took control late in the second half to gain a close victory.

Next up was the first ever mixed hockey game and it was fabulous to see full teams playing in the spirt of the game with the more experienced OPs taking the victory while the College pupils got some valuable game time in before their season starts.

Moving on to Netball, the College's team secured their first victory of the day with an outstanding performance against an experienced OPs team, the win showed that this team could be set for success this year.

The OPs v College 1st XV John Shinkwin Trophy match produced an entertaining match with a strong OPs team made up from leavers from 2022 and 2023 taking the victory. The young College team showed promise for what could be a good season ahead.

The results of the matches were as follows:

  • Football – Staff 3 v OPs 5
  • Netball – College 40 v OPs 13
  • Mixed Hockey – College 3 v OPs 6
  • Rugby – College 17 v OPs 41

At the After Match Awards, the OPs proudly raised both the Alex Wallis Memorial Shield and the John Shinkwin Cup.

Lee Cassell, Foundation Director of Sport, commented, "It was fantastic to see so many OPs returning to play in some very competitive games against our College teams. It showed the true spirt of the Princethorpe community and gave staff, pupils, OPs and parents the opportunity to watch entertaining matches over the course of the day and all while enjoying some fabulous food."

"A huge well done to all those who played and made the day so special. I look forward to seeing them all again next year on Saturday 31 August 2024 for the next OPs vs College Sports Day."

Thanks to all the players, supporters, organisers and caterers for making the day such a lovely, relaxed affair and to BTEC Music student Noah Kemp, Year 9 Jasper Nicholls and OP Bowen Kent for performing live during the day.

OPs Summer Supper Reunion 2023

As has become traditional at the end of June, it was a pleasure to once again host the OPs Summer Supper Reunion at the College on Friday 23 June.

Representatives from the classes of 1973, 1983,1993, 2003 and 2013 returned for their respective 50th, 40th, 30th, 20th and 10th anniversaries of leaving, along with a smattering of OPs from other years and former and current staff.

The evening started with an optional tour of school at 6.00pm ably led by Alex Darkes and Eddie Tolcher. The large group meandered excitedly around the campus, visiting areas such as the Chapel, the Library, the cloister corridors, Roundhouse, the newer Limes Building and Sixth Form Centre before venturing out to see the site of the new Science Centre which is nearing completion just off the Lime Walk.

After a glass or two of Pimms in the Quad, the group was warmly welcomed by Foundation Principal, Ed Hester and invited to take their seats in the Refectory. Fr Alan Whelan, MSC, said Grace and the refectory became a hubbub of chatter and laughter as sat in their year groups or decades the gathered OPs happily caught up and reminisced over a delicious three course meal. They also enjoyed a rolling powerpoint prepared by archivist, Catherine Lewis, which featured images of many of the attendees from year books, prize giving programmes and the College’s magazine, The Tower.

After dinner, Ed Hester, thanked the College’s wonderful catering team and spoke to the assembled gathering about developments at the College, including the new Science Centre, the arrival of new Headmaster, Grove du Toit, and how the Development Office is making a Princethorpe education more accessible for a wider range of pupils, through its Bursary Programme.

Ed then invited Peter Rollason, Chairman of the OPs Association to address the gathering. Peter detailed the work of the Association and the annual programme of activity including OP Friendly Faces, networking, social events and the termly e-newsletter. He urged the OPs to spread the word, get involved and encourage other to join Princethorpe Connect, the College’s online alumni network.

Finally, as Ed introduced them, Peter presented gifts on behalf of the Association to one longstanding member of staff, counsellor, Heather Tocher, and six members of staff who are leaving or retiring after serving at the College from between six and 41 years respectively, Anna Jelec, from the SEND Department, Vanessa Rooney, Registrar, Julie Satchwell, Student Hub Manager, Loretta Curtis, Development Assistant and former Registrar, Chris Kerrigan Head of English and last but by no means least, Mike Taylor, Head of Geography.

As the supper came to a happy close, guests mingled over coffee, teachers enjoyed hearing of their pupils’ achievements and plans were made for keeping in touch and more informal reunions in the future.

Thanks go to our wonderful catering team, the OPs Committee and all who contributed to the success of the event.

We will shortly begin planning for the 2024 Supper Reunion, which will be aimed at all those with a leaving year with a 4 and will take place on Friday 28 June 2024. Why not come along?

The Piranhas Held A Commemorative Match For Mike

The College's staff cricket team, The Piranhas, marked Mike Taylor, Head of Geography's, retirement after 42 years at the College with a special commemorative match on Friday 30 June against former members of staff.

The new Piranhas vs the old Piranhas match was masterminded by Assistant Head, Co-Curricular, Neil McCollin and former Head of Biology and Games stalwart Bernie Moroney.

It was fantastic to see so many former members of staff returning for the match, either to play or to lend their support, those returning included:

  • Paul Adams
  • Jonny Allen
  • Debs Brookes
  • Peter Griffin
  • John Harwood
  • Mick Kitteridge
  • Ed MacFetridge
  • Colin Morgan
  • Bernie Moroney
  • Nathan Reynolds
  • Barbara and Lou Skiffington
  • and last but by no means least Rob Startin

Neil commented, “It was a fantastic evening and so lovely to have so many former staff come back to celebrate Mike’s long tenure at the College. I am sure the event will be repeated and the Piranhas will go from strength to strength. It was so wonderful to hear the many stories of how the Piranhas have developed since their inception in 1982."

The final results after 16 overs was a win for the Ed Hester-led young Piranhas. The party enjoyed after match refreshments and yet more fun with plenty of catching up into the evening.

St Mary’s Priory Reunion For Very Special Old Princethorpians

On Saturday 9 September we were delighted to welcome to the College some of the ‘old girls’ from St Mary’s Priory, the school on the site before Princethorpe College was founded. The group are known to us as ‘Very Special Old Princethorpians (VSOPs).

The informal get-together, allowed for plenty of time to chat, reminisce and to look around the College and see how it has changed over the last sixty or seventy years.

The day started with coffee and pastries, and plenty of time to catch up with old friends and make new acquaintances. The Development Office had set up a fascinating display of memorabilia, and our VSOPs took great delight in browsing through it all. They also enjoyed recording their memories of St Mary’s Priory, in a special audio recording booth, adding their fascinating spoken history to the Foundation’s archives.

We were overwhelmed by the warmth and regard the VSOPs showed the College, and it was lovely to spend time with the ‘old girls’, hearing of their school days here. For us, it was a further opportunity to cement friendships and to learn more about the history of the place which we all love so much.

At coffee time we heard from VSOP Sr Monica Lewis who shared her calling with the group speaking of her life in a Benedictine community in Germany. We then made time for a quick group photograph, then after a delicious buffet lunch we hosted a Zoom call to allow the more distant VSOPs including Sr Mary Bernard to join in the reunion.

Headmaster, Grove du Toit, popped in to welcome the VSOPs back to Princethorpe before Foundation Assistant Head, Alex Darkes, took our guests on a tour of the College, taking in the latest addition to the College’s facilities, the new Science Centre, as well as the original chapel, now a library, and ending in the church for a short service given by Father Teddy O’Brien, MSC, with the organ played by organist Tim Campain. Following the service, our guests were treated to afternoon tea, and a final chance to look at the archives, speak with current members of staff and exchange farewells.

Farewell To The Class Of 2023

Princethorpe’s Upper Sixth celebrated the end of the examination season and their time at Princethorpe with a beautiful Thanksgiving Eucharist and a fabulous farewell ball. It was one last chance for them to gather to reminisce over their time at the College, the friends they have made and the many adventures they have had along the way.

Parents and students came together on Thursday 29 June to mark the end of their Princethorpe journey with a moving Eucharist service in the Chapel and enjoyed a buffet supper afterwards in their home for the last two years, the Sixth Form Centre.

Their Upper Sixth Leavers’ Ball followed one week later on Wednesday 5 July at Warwick House in Southam. The students smartly attired in black tie and ball gowns enjoyed a sparkling reception, followed by a delicious sit-down dinner, much anticipated speeches and then dancing until dark.

Both were joyous occasion with lots of laughter, shared memories and plans for the future. Head of Sixth Form, Ben Collie said, “We wish all the Upper Sixth the very best as they move on from Princethorpe. We very much hope that they all keep in touch and come back to tell their teachers and future pupils all about their fascinating endeavours and achievements. They have been a delightful year group, have worked hard and we are confident they will be rewarded with success when the A-level results are published in August.”

Photos from the ball are available on Princethorpe Connect.

Geoff Was Our Summer Cream Tea Prize Draw Winner

It was great to hear back from our Princethorpe Connect Summer Prize Draw winner, OP Geoff Taylor (Class of 1996) who took safe delivery of a delicious cream tea hamper back in July.

Geoff updated us on how he has been faring over the last few years:

'I now live in St Albans and have been here since 2005, having moved to London to work in recruitment straight after university and I’ve remained in the South (and in recruitment!) since.

I’m married to Vanessa and we have two, now not so young, children, Sam (18) who is hoping to head off to Uni in September and Hattie (15). I still see a number of people regularly from my Princethorpe days, both from my leavers' year (96) and my brother, Stuart's (94).'

It was good to hear things are going well for Geoff and by the looks of it there was enough cream tea treats for whole family to enjoy!

Princethorpe Connect is our growing online alumni network, with over 1,400 online members now. Why not sign up to keep in touch with developments and events, receive the OP e-newsletter and to network with fellow alumni and members of staff?

Leading Edge Sustainability Artefact To Go On Display In Science Centre

Huge thanks to OP and current parent Ian Vincent, who works at Jaguar Land Rover, for helping the College to procure this super display of an electronic drive unit from a Jaguar I-Pace as a scientific artefact for the College’s new Science Centre.

Depicting the motor, gearbox, transmission, battery and inverter, that turns DC into AC, along with assisting with the regenerative braking system, it’s an absolutely fantastic piece that showcases leading edge sustainability technology and is just perfect to act as inspiration for Princethorpe’s young scientists and engineers.

A Jaguar I-Pace Electric Powertrain, sourced by current parent Stefan Fuchss, will also go on display in the entrance to the Science Centre as part of the College’s commitment to providing the very best learning environment, one that nurtures young minds and fosters a deep appreciation and passion for science.

We are most grateful to Ian, and also to Princethorpe parents, Oliver Boakes and Stefan Fuchss, and to Nikola Uminska, all from JLR, for their support in arranging for the College to have these wonderful display items.

Ian visited the College to assemble the unit ready to be displayed and is pictured here with Sixth Form prefects, Amy Hogg, Chris Lock and Joseph Newborough.

OP Sean Webb Visited His Old School

The College was delighted to welcome OP Sean Webb back to Princethorpe during the summer holidays for a tour of the school.

Sean is a former pupil (having attended the College from 1977-1984), and was visiting the area with his 12-year-old son Declan. Sean and his family were over from France where he has lived for the past 28 years.

New receptionist and OP herself Katie Strange was pleased to show them round.

Sean was delighted to see his old school and the school where his own father Bill Webb taught clarinet and saxophone for a time. He was particularly pleased to visit the Chapel, where he had got married and also the Orchard where he had fond memories of his Games lessons.

It was great to welcome them back to Princethorpe.

OP Friendly Faces Help The Next Generation Of OPs

This autumn, we have been busy matching OP Friendly Faces (those already established at university) to our recent Upper Sixth Leavers who have headed off to university this term. We have successfully managed to match a number of leavers, many thanks to all the Friendly Faces supporting this initiative, it really does make a difference to those first few weeks away from home!

For all those starting university this year, here are some top tips from those who have experienced it first-hand.

1. Join a sports club or society. This is an amazing way to meet new people who share the same hobby or interest and will integrate you perfectly into the university experience as well as a great social and night life.

2. It may be tempting to pack everything you own when preparing for university but really you should only take the essentials - rooms in student halls tend to be quite small!

3. Attend your university's freshers fair! It's the best way to discover what your university is offering as well as local businesses trying to grab your attention. They normally hand out loads of freebies too.

4. Plan a weekly budget. With the cost of living increasing, it's a good idea to track your money and know what you will be prioritising when it comes to spending.

5. Learn how to cook the basics. It is far cheaper than constantly buying ready meals or takeaways.

6. Facebook groups and hashtags on Twitter and Instagram are a great way to connect with your  flatmates and course-mates on campus. Connecting with fellow students is an ideal way to ease your fears about making friends. Remember, everyone is in the same boat, so everyone will be eager to join in the conversation and make connections.

7. Stay active. It is important to keep your physical health in check as well as your mental health. There will be accessible to talk to at your university in your student union if you feel as though you are struggling. Try to eat well, exercise regularly and allow yourself some downtime in order to create a balance alongside your studies.

8. Don't rush into finding a house for your second year. You will get to know more people as the months pass by. Do no presume you have to share a house with your flat mates from first year. Try to find likeminded people who you get along with and attend the housing fair! There will be plenty of houses to go around.

9. Communicate with your lecturers. If you are struggling with your work or have a question, don't be afraid to email your lecturers. They may be busy but they want the best for you and will respond and support you.

10. Remember that moving away from home is a big step! It is normal to feel homesick and lonely from time to time. Social media may give you the impression that everyone is having a great time, but they're probably finding it hard too.

And last but by no means least, here are our top five don't forgets!

1. Buy a student rail card - you will save so much money!

2. Subscribe to a free Unidays or Student Beans account. They give you access to loads of discount codes.

3. A clothes airer.

4. Back up your uni work!!

5. If you want to have a job alongside your studies, then start looking as soon as you can. The process can take longer than you think!

OPs Welcomed Back To Work For The Foundation

This autumn, the Foundation is delighted to have welcomed back to the fold a number of former pupils and staff.

At Princethorpe College, OP Katie Strange (Class of 2015), has joined the Reception team. Katie stayed on at Princethorpe as a Teaching Assistant after finishing Sixth Form but then went to work at Abraxas Cookshop for six and a half years. However, the lure of Princethorpe remained strong and we are delighted she has returned to the College as part of our friendly front of house team.

OP Tom Gleghorn (Class of 2000) has also returned to Princethorpe College as Head of Academic PE. Tom studied at Exeter University, and then trained as a PE teacher. He enjoyed a year out travelling the world visiting Australia and South America. He then worked in schools in London, Coventry and Rugby before the pull of Princethorpe brought him back here. It is great to have Tom working in our talented PE and Sports team.

OP Lily Draper (Class of 2023) has stayed on at Princetorpe College to support us as a Graduate Teaching Assistant this year.

OP Lizzie Hester (Class of 2012) will return after half term as a teacher of Religious Studies while OP Dan Hogg, who left the College in 2020, is now supporting the College's IT team.

OP Charlie Ashley, who left Princethorps in 2008, is back working within the Foundation as Form Teacher for Junior 4 at Crackley Hall School. He has been joined there by recent leaver OP Eve Farquharson (Class of 2023) and OP Matthew Duigan (Class of 2018) who are both working as part of the school's Teaching Assistant team.

Three former staff have also chosen to return to Princethorpe. We are delighted to have Kate Ingram back teaching Spanish, Aimee Brookes working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and we are also pleased to welcome back Catherine Morrish who was previously a trainee teacher here.

It is fabulous to see the Foundation's Spirit of Family ethos in action and its deeply rooted strong ties evident in our community. We wish all our returning OPs and staff a successful year.

BBC Filmed At Princethorpe Over The Summer Break

There was much excitement at the start of the summer holidays here at Princethorpe College when we welcomed the BBC back to Princethorpe for the filming of the third series of The Sister Boniface Mysteries, the Father Brown spin off that features Lorna Watson as Sister Boniface, a brilliant Vespa driving, crime solving Catholic nun.

According to UKTV this latest series includes the story of a famous organist murdered mid tune in the Chapel (we wonder where that might be) as well as story lines of mysterious kidnappings and stolen precious jewels.

It was fantastic to see the College taken back in time but quite surreal to come round the corner and find yourself confronted by members of the cast dressed as nuns.

We can’t wait to see the new episodes and will keep you posted on when the new series will air.

New Film Reveals What Princethorpe’s Sixth Form Is Really All About

"What is the Sixth Form at Princethorpe really all about?" That’s the question that followers of the school’s social media were teased with.

The College repeatedly posed the question alongside a series of images and information on Sixth Form life in the countdown to a big reveal on Thursday 21 September, at 4.00pm, when the new Sixth Form film, Princethorpe People, was premiered.

Comments, Head of Sixth Form, Ben Collie, "As the film explains, the Sixth Form at Princethorpe is about academic achievement, exploring new passions and preparing for the future, but most importantly of all, it’s about people. At Princethorpe we have a dynamic community of young people with individual talents, interests and aspirations. The majority move up from within the College, but a significant number also join us from other schools. It is our job to support them all to become whatever they want to be and get them to wherever they want to go."

Produced by the Foundation Marketing Team and award-winning Affixxius Films, the concept for the film was developed following research amongst last year’s Lower and Upper Sixth. The film was shot in the Trinity Term and captures glimpses of Sixth Form life and individual portraits of Sixth Formers and some of the members of staff who support them along their journeys.

With thanks to the students and staff who took part and the film crew for bringing what makes our Sixth Form so special to life on the screen.

Click here to view Princethorpe People.

We hope you enjoy it. We'd love you to like and share it on social media too!

South Africa Sports Tour 2023

At the start of the summer holidays the College enjoyed a successful 16-day sports tour to South Africa. Taking our largest squad ever, of some 123 pupils and 16 staff, playing four sports, Rugby, Football, Netball and Hockey, the tour travelled to Johannesburg and then on to Cape Town, Pretoria and Pilanesberg for a fortnight full of keenly contested matches and spectacular sight-seeing.

During the tour the Rugby, Football, Netball and boys’ and girls’ Hockey teams participated in five full days of good spirited and competitive training and matches against school and club teams. Our South African hosts were so hospitable, and the training and matches were great experiences for all, with valuable lessons learnt both on and off the field.

Away from the sports field, the tour offered participants the chance to broaden their horizons with sightseeing and educational experiences that included the history of South Africa with tours of Soweto and the Apartheid Museum and a visit to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. Pupils also took part in an eye-opening tour of Cape Town’s oldest back township and get up close and personal with the wildlife in game drives at Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The tour party all enjoyed the spectacular scenery of Table Mountain in Cape Town and the charming costal town of Hout Bay.

Lee Cassell, Director of Sport, and leader of the tour, said, “South Africa is a truly stunning country, passionate and fiercely competitive in their sport. We have had an excellent trip and played some inspiring matches and I know that our Princethorpe pupils will have returned home with a truly wonderful set of memories.”

Our thanks go to all of the staff involved in putting together and running such an impressive trip. We look forward to the experiences translating into positive results on the pitches over the coming season.

Staff Run 100km For Mary's Meals

On Tuesday 29 August, 27 runners from Princethorpe College (with the support of seven further staff) took on a 100km relay run in aid of Mary’s Meals.

Starting from the top of Cleeve Hill, in Cheltenham, and following the Cotswold and Centenary Ways, their route took them through Winchcombe, Stanway, Broadway and on towards Chipping Campden, then Ilmington, Whatcote and Ratley before reaching Burton Dassett, on to Itchington Holt, Ufton and Hunningham and finally to the finish line at Princethorpe College. Split into 12km sections, staff ran in small groups running one, two or for the most dedicated of runners four parts of the 100km course.

The challenge was in honour of fundraising legend and Mary’s Meals supporter, Rod Isaacs, who is moving on to a new role outside the Foundation. It was a thank you for his extraordinary dedication and commitment to organising adventures for students that raise money for good causes, and it kick started the fundraising for Mary’s Meals for this school year.

It was an epic fundraising event with the team completing the relay run in a fabulous 11 hours and 57 minutes (that's an average 12kmph), despite the rain soaking everyone in the final sections of the day. OPs Tom and Will Crowfoot both ran over 50km while Rod Isaacs completed 36km.

Please do consider supporting the runners by donating to their JustGiving page here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/princethorpe-marysmeals23-24

Huge congratulations to everyone involved but a special thank you must go to the organiser, Head of Outdoor Education and Teacher of PE and Games, Will Bower.

Princethorpe College Celebrates Excellent Public Examination Results

Princethorpe College is celebrating another year of excellent exam results.

112 students sat A-level and BTEC examinations and completed the Extended Project Qualification this summer. In one of our strongest years to date, 70% of all grades were A*- B, with more than a third being A*- A. Impressively, 17 high-flyers achieved three or more A* or A grades.

At GCSE Princethorpe pupils also performed well, from a cohort of 159 pupils, 42% of all entries were the coveted 9, 8 or 7 grades, with 16 pupils achieving all 9, 8 or 7 grades.

Grove du Toit, Headmaster, commented, "We are delighted with the excellent results that our Sixth Form students and Year 11 pupils have achieved against a backdrop of unprecedented challenges over the last few years. Their results reflect their hard work and perseverance, all credit goes to our pupils and staff for their commitment, collaboration and hard work."

He continued, "We are proud of their academic achievements, but all these pupils have many other fine qualities: kindness, respect and a strong sense of right and wrong, which will be tremendously important for them as they move on to the next phase of their lives. We congratulate them all on their well-deserved success."

Heritage Open Day A Huge Success

Princethorpe College was delighted to take part in the 2023 Heritage Open Days festival on Sunday 10 September. England's largest community led festival of history and culture, Heritage Open Day, runs annually celebrating local history by giving access to thousands of places usually closed to the public.

The College has taken part in the festival for many years and on the day welcomed over 50 visitors through its doors. They came from near and far, including local neighbours as well as parents of pupils and those interested in local history. All were made welcome and enjoyed a fascinating tour that took in Pugin’s magnificent Chapel, the Cloisters, Nuns’ Cells, Library (formerly a church) and the unique Roundhouse.

Foundation Assistant Head Alex Darkes and former staff member and new OP Loretta Curtis acted as tour leaders sharing wonderful insights into the history of the magnificent building and the amazing people that made it the place it is today.

A huge thank you to all who kindly organised and supported this super community event.

Plenty Of Changes To The College Campus This Year

Over the summer holiday the Estates and Grounds teams worked very hard to prepare the College for the new academic year. Alongside their normal programme of maintenance, the teams had to cope with the relocation of departments and the repurposing of rooms facilitated by the move of Science into its brand new building.

There were plenty of exciting changes visible for pupils when they returned to school. Maths now has a suite of new teaching rooms in the main building along the first floor, there is a huge new technology workshop and a brand-new textiles that have expanded the Design Technology teaching spaces. The Cloister corridor has been opened up and now leads to an additional dedicated Drama teaching space. History has relocated to the second floor while Geography has moved to a new location on the ground floor. The staff got to move out of their marquee into a new staff room, in what was the old lab G4. Even the Headmaster's Office had a makeover. Then outside the new netball courts were made ready for use.

We shared photos on the College's Facebook page back in August but thought our Old Princethorpians would also enjoy seeing them too. Click view gallery to have a look.

A huge thank you to all the team who worked so hard to deliver all the projects here and at Crackley Hall and Crescent School too.

Development News

Introducing The Bruce Townsend Laboratory

We're excited to announce a significant development in our school's new Science Centre – the naming of a Chemistry laboratory as The Bruce Townsend Laboratory. This designation serves as a tribute to Bruce Townsend, a prominent figure in the field of Chemical Engineering, and a former parent who now has a grandson at Princethorpe College.

Born on 25 July 1929, Bruce Townsend was among the pioneering students who pursued Chemical Engineering at University College London during the 1950s.

Bruce's professional journey aligned with the transformation of Courtaulds, a company originally rooted in silk spinning in the 18th Century. Under his guidance, Courtaulds evolved into a global leader in man-made fibers by blending chemicals with wood pulp fibre. Notably, Bruce played a pivotal role in establishing wood pulp mills in Swaziland, involving intricate negotiations with tribal leaders to secure necessary resources.

Advancing in his career, Bruce assumed the role of Chief Executive of Research at Courtaulds, positioning him at the forefront of scientific innovation. His commitment to exploration led to groundbreaking discoveries, including Alginate – a revolutionary substance combining chemicals with sea kelp, transforming wound dressings and patient care.

Bruce's contributions were acknowledged with the Queen's Awards for Export and Technology in 1989, highlighting the vital role of Chemical Engineers in addressing global challenges related to water, energy, food, and well-being.

Believing in the importance of nurturing the next generation of scientists, Bruce's infectious enthusiasm and charisma left a lasting impact on all who crossed his path. The Bruce Townsend Lab is a testament to his legacy, providing an advanced platform for hands-on experiments, research, and collaborative learning, nurturing a passion for science among our students.

By attaching Bruce Townsend's name to this laboratory, we honour his lasting impact on Chemical Engineering and his unwavering belief in the power of scientific exploration. This lab embodies our commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering a deep appreciation for science.

The naming of The Bruce Townsend Lab signifies more than just recognition – it represents our school's dedication to providing pupils with the tools they need to excel in the scientific realm. We move forward with Bruce's legacy as an inspiration, fuelling our aspirations for a brighter scientific future.

Introducing The Princethorpe Foundation’s Annual Fund

The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of philanthropy at The Princethorpe Foundation and allows parents, supporters, and friends in the wider community to make a voluntary contribution to support the school. Those who give to this fund, including many members of staff, have the satisfaction of knowing that their donations have a significant impact. Such gifts touch the lives of every pupil in all our schools, every day of the year.

Each year, this fund supports the purchase of necessary academic and co-curricular equipment, ensures educational, enrichment and entertainment opportunities for pupils, and helps maintain the Schools’ academic and sporting facilities. The Annual Fund helps us to move forward with our plans to improve and develop the schools and the teaching and learning experiences that take place within them.

Gifts to this fund are unrestricted, allowing the Foundation’s leadership to determine where support is most needed, and can do the most good. The Annual Fund contributions are at the heart of all that we do, and all that we give to our pupils.

Every contribution is meaningful, regardless of amount and many of our supporters choose to make regular contributions, monthly or annually, big or small. These regular donations are helpful and popular as they provide critical and predictable support for the School, year on year, whilst also allowing donors to plan their giving. Those that give regularly, make a significant difference to our pupils' experiences.

Every year, parents, grandparents, Old Princethorpians, staff and friends of the Foundation donate to the Annual Fund. We invite you to help us by donating to the Annual Fund.

Summer Fete Celebrates Crescent’s 75th Anniversary

Past and present pupils, parents, staff and trustees came together on Saturday 10 June to mark Crescent School’s 75th anniversary. Out on the school playing fields the Friends of Crescent hosted a traditional summer fete, while inside the school old pupils enjoyed wandering through the classrooms and exploring the archive displays.

The anniversary fete was well attended with pupils and teachers from across the generations, from the sixties through to more recent years, returning to visit their old school. Many were delighted to find old photos of themselves, and fascinating memorabilia retrieved from the archives. Archivist, Catherine Lewis, was kept busy as old pupils put names to photos and shared memories and even donations for her collection. The oral history booth was popular with all, who were happy to record their memories of life at Crescent School.

The school fields were transformed thanks to plenty of enthusiasm, gazebos and bunting and the British weather blessed us with superb sunshine, allowing all to relax and enjoy themselves and their ice creams.

It was a very special occasion, enjoyed by everyone, that gave many the chance to reconnect and share fond memories.

Our thanks go to all the staff, pupils and parents who contributed to the celebrations and also to all the past pupils and teachers who attended and made the event such a great success. We do hope they enjoyed their walk down memory lane.

We encourage everyone who has a connection to the school, or who would like to share their memories and be kept up to date with news from the school, to register on Princethorpe Connect or to join the Old Crescentians facebook group here.

An Evening With OP Marc Marot

Friday 13 October 2023 - 7.00pm to 10.00pm

We are thrilled to extend a warm invitation to you for an evening that promises to be both enlightening and entertaining. Former pupil Marc Marot will be making a special return to Princethorpe to deliver a keynote address about his illustrious career in the Music and Art Industries. This is a free to attend event and supper will be provided.

Marc embarked on his professional journey in 1982, taking on the role of 'Professional Manager' at the UK Independent music publisher, Eaton Music Ltd. In this capacity, he collaborated with renowned film composers like George Fenton, Carl Davis, and Henry Mancini, as well as iconic pop groups such as Status Quo.

In 1984, he assumed the position of Managing Director at Blue Mountain Music, where he had the privilege of working closely with the legendary U2 and their reggae music catalogue.

Among Marc's impressive portfolio of music publishing signings are notable names like Massive Attack, De La Soul, Julia Fordham, and Shakespeare's Sister.

His career continued to ascend as he took on various roles within Island Records, eventually becoming the Managing Director in 1990, making him the youngest MD in the UK music industry at that time.

During his tenure as MD at Island Records, Marc's leadership played a pivotal role in nurturing and developing a roster of exceptional artists, including:

  • Pulp
  • PJ Harvey
  • The Stereo MCs
  • P.M. Dawn
  • The Cranberries
  • Elbow
  • Chaka Demus and Pliers
  • NWA
  • The Orb
  • Ice Cube
  • Talvin Singh
  • Tricky
  • Nine Inch Nails

His contributions led to Island artists winning the prestigious Mercury Music Record of the Year award three times and achieving ten short-listed albums. Remarkably, artists signed during this period went on to claim 25% of all the prizes awarded in the competition's 20-year history.

Marc also played a pivotal role in guiding U2's career during the 1990s, from the release of Achtung Baby to just prior to the launch of All You Can't Leave Behind, resulting in nearly 60 million album sales.

In 1998, he introduced Bono to the concept of Third World debt relief through his involvement in the 'Jubilee 2000' campaign. Marc oversaw the 'drop the debt' initiative within the music industry, earning gratitude from Bono, who acknowledged his efforts on the MTV awards stage and at the UN council chamber in New York.

To this day, the acts he discovered or managed have amassed an impressive record, achieving 38 Top 10 singles, including an astounding 18 #1 singles on the UK charts.

This is a free to attend event and supper will be provided. You can register and find out more here.

Old Princethorpian Interview

Sam Higginson

1. Bit of background, where you live, what you do for a living:

After leaving Princethorpe, I went on to study Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Nottingham. I completed a placement year with Marks and Spencer, and joined them once I graduated as a Food Technologist.

I am now Head of Food Technology for Groceries, Non-Food (think cleaning, laundry, cards and wraps etc), Hampers and Soft Drinks (they wouldn’t let me near the alcohol department - dangerous!) and without bragging, i think i have the best job in the world! I get to eat and create amazing products that people love every day. In my role, I am responsible for the safety, quality, sustainability and legality of the products in my departments. No day is ever the same, and i get to visit our wonderful suppliers most weeks. I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the world including South Africa to see vine fruit, and last year visited Kenya, Malawi and Rwanda to visit our tea and coffee growers.

Homewise, I was in London with my husband Jose and our cat Sanook, but our London adventure came to an end when we moved back to Warwickshire in July to take on 300 year old doer upper.

2. Age:

28

3. When were you at Princethorpe - years from and to?

2005 - 2012

4. What was the school like in your day?

I do remember when looking around the college on an open day the many portacabins. By the time I joined these gradually made way for the amazing sixth form centre, which we were lucky enough to have by the time we entered sixth form. The school really grew whilst I was there, and even though it was only 10 years ago, it’s changed a lot since I left when I have been back to visit. It was also the days of Jamie Olivier, and i will never forgive him for taking away our tuck shop.

5. How did Princethorpe affect the person you are today?

Princethorpe played a key role in shaping who I am today. The moral compass and values instilled in me still guide me today. The one thing that always stays with me is the importance of community and belonging to something bigger than just yourself.

6. What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Just relax, the world is actually a pretty great place and will love you just for being you. Be yourself, shoulders back and stand tall.

7. Who or what has been the greatest influence on your life?

Probably my grandad - he was an engineer by trade, and always taught me ‘if you’re going to do something, you might as well do it properly’ and that’s generally how i approach my life - all in, or nothing.

8. What keeps you awake at night?

Nowadays, not a lot. I’ve learnt to worry and stress less about work, and just enjoy the ride of life.

9. What has been your proudest moment/greatest achievement so far?

Being promoted to Head of Food Technology at M&S was definitely a big deal. I’m the youngest person ever to be promoted to the position, and i’ve felt a real sense of pride paving the way for other young people to get on through the ranks - age is just a number!

10. What’s your biggest indulgence?

100% an M&S melt in the middle pudding (or 2) - 50% more chocolate sauce than anyone else - just saying!

11. If you had to have one last meal, what would it be?

I would start with some delicious freshly baked crusty bread, with some proper butter and maybe a few super juicy anchovies. For main it would be a Chicken Katsu curry from our local japanese takeaway that comes smothered in garlic, finished off with not just any melt in the middle chocolate pudding, an M&S chocolate melt in the middle pudding. All that, washed down with a glass of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

12. If you could be anywhere right now, where would it be and who would be with you?

Take me right back to a beach in Antigua. We visited just before lockdown and it was pure bliss - i’d take Jose if he’s lucky

13. Lasting memories of Princethorpe:

I have so many memories, it’s hard to choose. A particular favourite has to be walking in to a Religious Studies class to find Fr Whelan stood by the window waving to the outside (this was after we had submitted a mock essay for review). We sat down and he soon followed ‘Good bye A stars, Hello F’s’. I also remember the incredible Princethorpe cookies that no doubt have taken several years off my life expectancy, but were absolutely worth it. Lastly our politics debates with Dr Peaple at A-level, and getting a lot of stick for being a right Tory at the age of 16!

What’s also wonderful is being able to build new memories through the OP events, dinners etc which are always good fun!

14. Are you in touch with any other Old Princethorpians, if so whom?

Absolutely - I still see the core gang of Lizzy Hester, Rosie Foden, Hannah Logue and Sophie Harrison-Hall regularly and back in Warwickshire I hope to meet up with more old friends to.

Births, Deaths & Marriages

Laura And Callum Have Got Engaged

Many congratulations to OP Laura Brazier (class of 2014) and her fiancé Callum Hassett who got engaged on Saturday 11 June 2023.

Laura told us:

'After a family BBQ held at their house, they went on a nice scenic walk with our dog (Raya) and Callum popped the question mid-walk whilst over-looking a beautiful view.

He had kept it a surprise excellently, as I did not expect it at all, but I was (and am) over the moon!

Our wedding is set for November 2024, so we are now navigating all that comes with planning a wedding (the good, the bad and the ugly!) but we absolutely cannot wait.'

That's fantastic news Laura, we wish you and Callum all the very best for your future together.

Lucy Marries Matthew At Princethorpe

Lucy McDermott (Class of 2016) and Matthew Bailey got married at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Princethorpe College on Saturday 5 August. Despite the weather they had a fantastic day!

They thanked Fr Teddy O’Brien MSC for making their day so special.

Many congratulations to Lucy and Matthew, we are glad you enjoyed your special day.

Ellie And Josh Are Newly Weds

Many congratulations to Ellie Ferris (class of 2011) and her new husband, Josh Thorton, who got married this September.

The couple had a fantastic day filled full of joy with laughter with their family and friends at the beautiful Tythe Barn which is located in north Oxfordshire near Bicester.

Ellie is currently a Senior Accountant with the commercial property development company, Mountpark.

RIP Sue Sheperd

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Sue Shepherd, former music teacher at Princethorpe for many years.

Sue was admitted to hospital on Thursday 1 June after a stroke. After further strokes she passed away on 22 June. She was surrounded by love and support and it was peaceful.

Sue Francis, former Director of Music remembers her fondly here:

Sue was a highly skilled musician, a superb exponent of early music and a wonderful harpsichordist and pianist. One of our most vivid memories of her performing was as pianist in the fiendishly difficult Schubert Trout Quintet which she played with such expertise along with other members of the music department in the college chapel several years ago.

Sue was on the teaching staff at Princethorpe for many years particularly with the academic A-level music department, as well as being a teacher of individual piano lessons.

Her very solid Christian faith sustained her throughout her life and latterly she was a lay reader and chorister at Holy Trinity church, Coventry. She had absolutely no doubts nor fears about meeting her Lord and Maker when her life on earth ended. She will be sadly missed.

A service of celebration and thanksgiving was held in July but can be viewed here.

Our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers go out Sue’s family and her friends.

Can you Help Update A History Of Crescent

We are well on our way to updating A History Of Crescent as part of the celebrations to mark the school’s 75th anniversary this year. Originally produced for the 60th anniversary back in 2006, we are adding two new chapters to the booklet this year, focusing on 2007 to 2017 and then from 2017 to the present day.

Former Headmaster Mr Huw Marshall, has been most helpful but we would still love to receive further information and especially pictures.

We are on the lookout for pre 2017 editions of the Circular or its predecessors but would love to hear from anyone who has anecdotes and memories they would be happy to share.

1837 Original Tresors De Confiance En Dieu Sourced For Princethorpe

Over the summer another special treasure was added to the archives when the College spotted a rare listing on the auction site ebay.

The original Tresors De Confiance En Dieu was quickly purchased and is now held safely within the Foundation's archives.

The book written in French, tells of the Order of Benedictine nuns who fled the French Revolution in 1792. After a period elsewhere in England, they settled in Princethorpe (Warwickshire) in the mid 1800s building the Priory which we know today as Princethorpe College.

Literally translating as 'Treasures of Trust in God ' we were more than delighted to add this treasure to our archives. It is a lovely old book in great condition.

OP Updates

Ben And Will Are Running The London Marathon 2024

Two OPs, Ben Haden and Will Pullen (Class of 2018) are lacing up their trainers ready to pound the pavements as they start their training after having been accepted to run in the London Marathon 2024.

Ben told us: ‘Whilst sitting on my sofa watching a movie, dairy milk in hand, the last thing I expected to see was a message from Will saying he was inspired by the movie ‘Run Fat Boy Run’ and would I run the London Marathon with him. Without much thought and just excitement, I said yes, half due to the thought of taking part in something so incredible and for a great cause, the other that I might not get accepted to run anyway, so I said yes why not, as I didn’t want to seem weak! Anyway, we got in and are now both training for the London Marathon 2024!

Our past sports experience together does not stretch further than the South Coast Tour 2013, third-team football, and some post-lockdown runs around Leamington – so we cannot wait to get started on this challenge. We have stretched ourselves further by aiming to finish within the 4-hour mark, so we really do have to get running! ‘

Ben is running in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity that provides young people with nurses, youth workers, and event organisers to help them cope with their illness. Across England, the charity has a specialist unit in every NHS cancer treatment hospital. The Teenage Cancer Trust are the only UK charity dedicated to this vital need. The support from the charity does not stop at a clear diagnosis. Instead, the nurses and youth workers stay with the young person from their first diagnosis and for up to two years after their clear diagnosis, to make sure the young person is comfortable and can live life to the full. He is aiming to fundraise £2,000 for this amazing cause!

Will is running for Anthony Nolan, an incredible charity which makes lifesaving connections between patients in need and strangers ready to donate their stem cells. Every year over 2,300 people start their search for a matching stem donor. This is because someone with blood cancer or a blood disorder is unable to produce healthy blood cells. After receiving a stem cell transplant and intensive chemotherapy the person has a fighting chance to begin to grow and make healthy blood cells. Anthony Nolan carries out groundbreaking research to improve survival rates and life after transplants. They also grow the stem cell register, finding more donors for patients and resources so that more local donors can be found. Will is aiming to raise £3,000 for this fabulous cause!

Ben and Will can’t wait for Sunday 21 April 2024, when all their training and fundraising will motivate them in their mammoth marathon run around the streets of London. They hope their efforts will provide a perfect reason to gather all their old friends from Princethorpe together and if their blisters are not too painful and legs not too sore they plan to go to the pub after for a well-deserved drink.

If you are interested in following their training ready for the big day, please follow their Instagram page aptly named @runfatboysrun_

Do consider supporting them as they tell us they will likely need as many shouts and cheers as they can get.

If you would like to donate to either (they will not be offended if you choose one or the other) their fundraising links are below, and any donations will be greatly appreciated.

James Godden Offers New Finances Pop Up Shop

Comments James, "Questions around Finance have undoubtedly become more pertinent of late. Will I have enough to last me into retirement? Are my investments performing in the best structure and most tax efficient way as possible? As a Midlands local, I want to ensure that as many people as possible from my area can discuss these sorts of questions, and that they shouldn't be charged for that initial discussion."

James and his colleague were in Long Buckby this week with the Pop Up Shop providing an informal space to talk about finances.

Ciara And Sophie Caught Up With Mr Kerrigan

It was lovely to welcome class of 2020 leavers, Ciara Hancox and Sophie Mitchell back to school at the end of August. The girls popped in to say hello and thank you to former Head of English, Chris Kerrigan, who was back in school for GCSE Results Day.

It was great to see them both looking so well and to catch up with their news, Ciara is going in to her final year at Gloucester studying Sports Journalism and Sophie is going into her final year at Nottingham studying Liberal Arts, so they are both putting the skills Mr Kerrigan taught them to good use.

We wish them well with their studies and of course all the best to Chris on his well-deserved retirement!

Luke Daniel Signed To Play American Football Professionally

We were so impressed to hear that OP Luke Daniel (Class of 2019) had been signed to play semi-professional American Football in Germany. Luke joined the Pforzheim Wilddogs for the 2023 season that runs April through to September. The team competes in the southern division of the German Football League 2.

Luke started playing American Football while still at Princethorpe with local team, the Etone Jaguars Amercian Football Academy in Nuneaton. He then made College history when as a Sixth Former, he became the first Princethorpe pupil to earn an international cap playing American Football for Great Britain.

After leaving the College, Luke went on to study Business with Finance at Leeds Beckett University where he continued to play American Football. He played on the Offensive Line at Centre for LBU in the BUCS Premier North League and reached the semi-finals of their national competition two years on the trot. While he was studying, he also played in the British National League for Premier League club Tamworth Phoenix.

Luke has been living in Pforzheim since just after Easter, completing the last pieces of work for his degree remotely, commuting back in between training sessions for the final in person requirements for his course.

Luke told us, “Being paid to play the sport I love and getting to travel at the same time is a dream come true. A major ambition achieved!”

Huge congratulations to Luke, what an amazing opportunity for him. We will all be following his career with interest.

The photo is of Luke in action with the ball.

Laura Brazier Is Now At ManiLife

OP Laura Brazier (Class of 2014) got in touch recently and shared news of her career. She told us:

After leaving Princethorpe in 2014, I joined Mondelez on their school leaver program.

Over three years, I completed my degree whilst working full time and moving through four different roles within the company, before being promoted to a national account manager role.

After Mondelez, I worked for varying businesses within FMCG; always food and beverage focused and generally within sales. However, I have also done some cross functional roles within supply chain and logistics as well as a marketing hybrid role.

I’m currently at an SME called ManiLife. My role is senior national account manager looking after total grocery sales and large national accounts. As well as supporting our UK and Ireland sales executives.

I’m currently in the process of setting up a school leaver program of my own at Manilife. As from personal experience I can only rave about them. The Mondelez program has helped spring board me into my career and I would love to help support and develop others careers in the same way.

It was great to hear Laura's news and also to receive her very kind offer to support future careers events.
